background
Rowen Thomas (They/Them) is an educator who has worked with 8-12 graders, college and university students, graduate students, adults, and professional learners for over a decade. Their approach to education is grounded in a critical constructivist pedagogy, in which they co-construct and co-create learning environments with their students and center their students’ needs. They utilize a strengths based approach in which students with historically underrepresented or marginalized identities can be uplifted and empowered to define and achieve their aspirations. As a queer, transgender, disabled Malayalee person of color from Texas born to immigrant parents, Rowen strives to be a visible role model for students with marginalized identities to pursue their passions with the support and space to learn which they deserve. Rowen focuses on understanding the personal and educational contexts that have lead students to tutoring and mentoring so that they can work together to co-create a uniquely responsive environment for students to be ready for growth through challenge and support. Their mentoring and tutoring approach centralizes the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and holistic student development tailored to the needs of each individual student.
